“How do I style the pillows on my sofa?” is a question I get asked a lot! Clients + friends a like reach out wanting to know tips + tricks for a laid back but put together look. If this is something you struggle with, keep reading!

I show a client the pillows I chose for her in this 3D render.

Here are some tips for decorating for spring, the CRD way:

  1. Choose pillows that are the right size. You don’ t want a pillow too small that it gets lost or too large that it covers your whole sofa! An ideal size is a 20×20 or 22×22. Add in a slightly smaller 18×18 and then layer a lumber pillow in front.
  2. Mix textures + patterns. This is a rule I follow in all aspects of Caroline Roach Designs and it’s especially true when it comes to pillows! Mix a floral with a linear pattern or a gingham with a vintage print. Add in some neutral texture and you’ve got a great combination!
  3. Quality over quantity. I am a sucker for inexpensive decor but you don’t have to sacrifice quality for your budget. When shopping for pillows, look for good quality pillow covers and then purchase your inserts separately. When buying from World Market or Target, look for a zipper to make sure the cover is removable. If the insert is stiff or lays flat, swap it! I love using these pillow inserts in place of the cheap ones usually found in affordable pillows. Pro tip: Use a pillow insert that is 2-4 inches larger than the cover. For example, if your cover is 20×20, use an insert that is 22×22.
I kept all my pillows the same color here but used different textures on each one .
Try mixing patterns & textures!
I layered different sized pillows here and I love the way it looks.
