How to Style a Mantle

The mantle in my living room.

It’s the post-Christmas refresh season where our homes feel empty and most of us are wanting a change – I for one am already anticipating spring! Whether you’ve just moved into a new place or are wanting to refresh your living room, this blog post covers some tips on how to style your mantle. I even included a template below so you can sketch out your design before you implement it. You’ll also find the links to all the items that I used! If you use the template to design your look, share it on Instagram or Facebook and tag me 🙂

I put together 3 looks and used these tips in each look.

  1. Choose 1 large piece of decor – You want this piece to be the focal point that you accessorize around. It could be a large mirror or a piece of art. The colors and style should compliment your mantle and not compete with it.
  2. Layer – Layering decor or art in front of each other helps add interest to your space. You can incorporate lots of pieces to create a unique look that can easily be switched up. Make sure all your pieces go together – not match, but compliment. You can do this through combining 1 or 2 styles or sticking to a color palette. If you’re struggling with what decor to use, I always use some sort of plant or stem, a vase, and a small object.
  3. Balance – When decorating with smaller pieces around your focal piece, make sure that the weight distribution is evenly spread  over your mantle. I’m not talking about pounds, but visual weight. The left side of your mantle and the right side should feel balanced visually – through colors, the size of the pieces, and the textures. If you are using different color pieces, don’t put all one color on the left and a different color on the right. Mix and match until you find a combination that looks right

You don’t have to style your mantle right the first go round. I usually move pieces around until it feels right. Let it sit for a little bit and live with it. If something seems off or isn’t working, play around with it. You can do this!
