The home we currently live in is definitely on the smaller size. At right around 1200 sq. feet, it’s roomy enough for my husband and I and isn’t too hard to fill with furniture. Actually, that’s my biggest challenge: picking only select pieces and not over-crowding a room with furniture & decor! I love it all & I want to hold on to beloved pieces for as long as I can for when we move to a larger house. (Thanks mom for storing some of my stuff!)

While decorating a small room has it’s workarounds (not making it feel like you’re hoarding, finding storage solutions, trying to make it not feel like a cave, etc.), decorating a large room can be difficult for its own set of grievances. Too much space can be overwhelming & can often not feel like “home” to you. It can be hard to make a large space feel cozy, lived in, and relaxing. I have seen a few women share their frustrations on Facebook & have been sharing with them my tips for decorating a large room, whether that is a master suite or your living room.

Use a large rug to ground the space.
  1. Please make sure your furniture fits the size of the room! Nothing makes a room feel incomplete or cold when the furniture isn’t to scale. If you have a large space (a master bedroom over 300 sq. feet or a grand living room with vaulted ceilings) you need furniture to match the scale! Larger sofas or decent sized dressers will fill the room much more than smaller, skinnier pieces. Not saying you can’t have thinner pieces…just mix them well and match the scale.
  2. Add curtains to your windows. Whenever I’m putting curtains in one of my designs or showing a client which ones to buy, I always, always tell them to make sure they go all the way to the ceiling and that they go wider than the window. In a small room this will add the illusion that it’s actually bigger. In a large space it will add texture, softness, and bring the room together to achieve that cozy look.
  3. Use a rug but make sure it’s big enough!
  4. Paint an accent wall. Paint it, add trim work, or hang up a frames for a gallery wall. This will help the room not to feel too “empty”. I’ve gathered some of my favorite spring art prints here.
  5. Add plants, faux or real. Placing a fiddle leaf or olive tree in the corner will make your space feel comfortable and homey.
  6. Soften the lighting by using lamps, not overhead lighting. This will immediately increase the level of coziness by 100%! I only ever use lamps in my house. You can find some of my favorite lamps here.
  7. Use throw blankets. On the bed, on the sofa, in a basket, etc. Putting out blankets makes your space a lot more relaxing.
  8. Add a full length mirror to fill in areas that seem sparse. This will also brighten your room aswell!
  9. Add a little sitting area.
The curtains go all the way to the ceiling and are spread thickly over the wall. This make the room feel more plush and cozy!
This sitting area in front of the windows is inviting and relaxing.
