Coastal living room decor is the perfect balance of crisp whites, soft browns, and hints of navy and/or baby blue. I have been loving light blue everything the past 2 months so naturally I wanted to design a room inspired by the soft and airy color. You don’t have to live near the beach to achieve a coastal inspired look in your home.

When someone tells me they want a coastal room in their home, that can at times lean a little theme-y. I try to stay away from themes as much as I can and lean more to using the word “inspired”. Coastal inspired sounds way more chic + adult than “beach themed”. For this coastal inspired living room, I definitely wanted to use the color blue but not in an obnoxious way. The goal is not to get sick of the color after a few months, but instead to be flexible. You should be able to tone up or tone down the colors as your feelings about the room change! I never want clients to feel stuck with a design that was expensive. Instead, I want the room to be able to grow with them as their style and tastes evolve.

When putting together an inspired look, whether this be African inspired, floral inspired, or inspired organic, try to keep most of the bigger pieces of furniture the most classic and neutral. This will allow you to achieve a room that is beautiful but flexible, like I was mentioning earlier. If you are able to swap out the smaller pieces of decor, that will keep you closer to a budget but still allow you to freshen things up every now and then. I kept the sofa a pretty white color and then paired it with 2 transitional swivel chairs. The slated wood on the arms is interesting and different and keeps the living room from being just like everyone elses. I used a driftwood coffee table to lean towards that coastal inspired look I was going for and grounded the furniture with a blue rug. Now this rug is not in your face blue, but is instead a soft, cozy, welcoming blue.

I allowed for more color in the entryway portion of this room. Imagine that the entry is just off of the living space and is visible from the living room. Since this is a smaller space I wanted to add in more color so I chose this baby blue entryway table and layered in a blue/gray wallpaper. A white capiz mirror adds a touch of the coast and really brings a level of sophisticated elegance.

For accessories I wanted to steer clear of sea shell accents or super kitchsy beach decor. Scalloped baskets, white and brown wall baskets, blue and white throw pillows, and frosted glass hurricanes all are inspired by the beach but could easily transition into other areas of your home!

The goal of Caroline Roach Designs is to help clients create beautiful, cozy spaces in their home that can grow with them as their styles change and evolve over time.
